Why does AOA show the wrong membership status for me?

Why does AOA show the wrong membership status for me?

If your AOA account shows an incorrect or inactive membership status, don't create a new account. In many cases, your membership information may simply need to be updated or matched to the correct AOA account.

Why might my membership status be incorrect?

There are several reasons your AOA membership status may not appear as expected.

You recently joined or renewed

If you recently joined or renewed your membership through your state or affiliate optometric association, AOA may not yet have received or processed the updated membership information.

This can result in your AOA account temporarily showing an inactive or incorrect membership status even though you have already paid your dues.

Your state or affiliate shows you as active

AOA membership and state or affiliate membership records may be maintained in separate systems.

If your state or affiliate association confirms that your membership is active but your AOA account does not reflect that status, your membership information may need to be updated with AOA.

Your payment was recently processed

A successful dues payment does not always mean your AOA account will reflect the new status immediately.

If you recently made a payment, allow time for your membership information to be processed and updated.

You may have more than one AOA account

Duplicate accounts can cause your membership to appear under one account while you are signed in to another.

For example, this may happen if you created a new account using a different email address instead of signing in to an existing AOA account.

Please do not create another account to resolve a membership-status issue. Creating additional accounts may make it more difficult to match your membership, continuing education records and other AOA information.

What should I do?

First, confirm that you are signed in to the correct AOA account.

If you recently joined, renewed or paid dues through your state or affiliate association, confirm that your payment and membership are active with that organization.

If your membership should be active but your AOA account still shows an incorrect status, contact AOA Member Services for assistance.

When contacting Member Services, please provide:

  • Your full name
  • Your AOA member ID, if known
  • The email address associated with your AOA account
  • Your state or affiliate optometric association
  • The approximate date you joined, renewed or paid your dues
  • A brief description of the membership status you expected to see

Providing this information can help us locate the correct membership record and determine why your status is not displaying as expected.

Should I create a new AOA account?

If you believe you already have an AOA account, do not create another one because your membership status appears incorrect.

Instead, contact AOA Member Services so we can help identify your existing account and membership record.
