Why can’t I access member-only content on AOA.org even though I’m a member?

If you are an active American Optometric Association member but cannot access member-only content, tools, or benefits on AOA.org, the issue is usually related to your login status, account setup, browser settings, or membership synchronization.

This article walks through the most common causes and solutions.

Common Reasons and Solutions

1. You Are Not Logged In

Even if your membership is active, you must be logged in to access member-only resources.

To log in:

  1. Visit www.aoa.org
  2. Select Sign In, located near the top righthand side of the the webpage.
  3. Enter your AOA ID/username and password

After logging in, refresh the page and try accessing the content again.

2. Your Membership May Not Be Active Yet

Recent joins, renewals, or dues payments may take time to sync across AOA systems.

This can happen if:

  • You recently joined AOA
  • You recently renewed your membership
  • Your state affiliate membership is still processing
  • Your payment is pending

What to do:

  • Wait up to 24 hours after payment or renewal
  • Log out and back in
  • Clear your browser cache and cookies

If access is still unavailable after 24 hours, email memberservices@aoa.org or you can contact Member Services by calling 800.365.2219.

3. You May Have Multiple Accounts

Some members accidentally create a second account using a different email address.

This can cause:

  • Missing member benefits
  • Duplicate profiles
  • Login confusion
  • Incorrect membership status display

Signs you may have duplicate accounts:

  • Your are not receiving AOA member pricing for events and CE on AOA.org
  • You receive emails at a different address than the one you use to log in
  • Your CE history or profile information is missing

What to do:

If you are unable to do a password reset or you are unable to recall your username using the original email address you registered under, please Contact Member Services for assistance.

4. Your Browser Session May Be Causing Issues

Sometimes saved browser data may interfere with website authentication.

Try these troubleshooting steps:

  • Clear your browser cache and cookies
  • Use a private/incognito browser window
  • Try a different browser
  • Disable browser extensions temporarily
  • Ensure cookies are enabled

Supported browsers include:

  • Google Chrome
  • Microsoft Edge
  • Safari
  • Firefox

5. You Are Accessing a Restricted Resource

Some resources are limited to specific member types or programs.

Examples may include:

  • Student-only resources
  • Paraoptometric certification tools
  • State affiliate resources
  • Committee or volunteer portals

If you believe you should have access, contact Member Services for verification.

Resetting Your Password

If you cannot remember your password:

  1. Select Forgot Password
  2. Enter the email address associated with your account
  3. Follow the reset instructions sent by email

If you do not receive the reset email:
