How Paraoptometrics Can Get Certified

I am a paraoptometric looking to get certified. How should I get started?

If you're ready to earn your AOA paraoptometric certification but aren't sure where to begin, follow the steps below.

The American Optometric Association (AOA), through the Commission on Paraoptometric Certification (CPC), offers four nationally recognized paraoptometric certifications:

  • Certified Paraoptometric (CPO®) – Entry level
  • Certified Paraoptometric Assistant (CPOA®) – Intermediate level
  • Certified Paraoptometric Technician (CPOT®) – Advanced level
  • Certified Paraoptometric Coder (CPOC®) – Specialty certification in coding

You do not have to be an AOA member to become certified or maintain your certification.

Step 1: Learn about the certification program

Step 2: Read the Candidate Handbook

Before applying for an examination, read the Paraoptometric Examination Candidate Handbook.

The handbook explains:

Step 3: Review the exam content and study resources

Once you've selected your certification, review the expanded examination outline and begin preparing with the available study resources.

Step 4: Submit your examination application

When you're ready, complete your application through Professional Testing Corporation (PTC) using the application link on the CPC webpage.

Before submitting your application:

  • Verify that you meet the eligibility requirements.
  • Review the current examination fees and application deadlines.
  • Submit any required documentation.

Step 5: Schedule your examination

After your application has been approved, Professional Testing Corporation (PTC) will email you a Scheduling Authorization containing your eligibility number and instructions for scheduling your examination.

Certification examinations are administered through Prometric testing centers. Depending on the examination, remote live proctoring may also be available. Review the Candidate Handbook for current testing options and availability.

Step 6: Take your examination

Before your testing appointment:

  • Review the "Know Before You Go" information.
  • Confirm your testing appointment.
  • Bring the required identification listed in the Candidate Handbook.
  • Arrive at the testing center (or prepare your remote testing environment) according to the provided instructions.

After completing your examination, follow the instructions provided by PTC regarding score reporting.

After you become certified

Paraoptometric certifications must be renewed every three years by meeting the continuing education and renewal requirements established by the Commission on Paraoptometric Certification.
